Prayers for Thomas J. Sullivan

With much sorrow, we regret to inform all that Our Little Superman, Thomas J. Sullivan gained his heavenly wings on May 26th, 2013. He touched and changed so many lives, especially all of us here at Team Thomas J.

R.I.P. Thomas. You were a brave person and faced your many battles with smiles that inspired us all. We have all been forever changed knowing you Thomas J. Sullivan.

Welcome to 'Team Thomas J'

Superman was a sweet little 6 year old boy named Thomas J. Sullivan from Ashville, Alabama and has a 3 year old little sister named Shelby. Thomas J was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December 2011.

Thomas's story as told by his mom in mid Jauary, 2013:
"Thomas was sent to the E.R at Children's Hospital on December 8, 2011. His eye doctor saw optic nerve swelling during Thomas' routine eye exam. We were sent to the E.R. from the eye doctor to be examined. A C.T. scan was done and a mass was found in the back of his brain. You have no idea how hearing that knocked the breath out of me. Thomas was admitted and went to surgery the next day. He had a craniotomy with posterior fossa tumor resection. Fancy words for tumor removal. One week later, pathology came back: grade 4 Medulloblastoma. This is an aggressive, fast growing malignancy. Thomas was discharged Dec. 23. Wasn't able to walk unassisted. Intense physical therapy has granted him that ability once again. A lumbar puncture and port placement was done Dec. 28. The L.P. showed his spinal fluid was positive for tumor cells...Thomas was now high risk. :-( Anyway...radiation began January 9, 2012. Before him was 30 treatments of cranial-spinal radiation."

"On treatment #12, my baby boy's hair began falling out. Heartbreaking. After all his radiation was complete, he got 4 weeks off. On March 28, 2012, his first chemotherapy cycle began. That was so hard. The necessary evil. Poison being pumped into his little 5 year old body. We have completed 5 out of 9 chemo cycles. We should finish in February 2013. Thomas has shown me the epitome of being brave. He is my Superman.

Surgery was performed in December of 2011 with chemo following and tests were continually done during 2012. As late as December 2012, no cancer cells were present. However, on January 6th, he was admitted to Children's Hospital of Birmingham having mild seizures. Many tests were ran and during mid-week, results came back that cancer cells were found in the tests ran on his spinal fluid. After many months of up and down battles, Thomas passed away on 26th of May, 2013.
